Caturthopadeśaḥ (Samādhi) · Verse 41

अथारम्भावस्था | ब्रह्मग्रन्थेर् भवेद् भेदो ह्यानन्दः शून्यसम्भवः | विचित्रः क्वणको देहे ऽनाहतः श्रूयते ध्वनिः

athārambhāvasthā | brahmagranther bhaved bhedo hyānandaḥ śūnyasambhavaḥ | vicitraḥ kvaṇako dehe'nāhataḥ śrūyate dhvaniḥ

Now the stage of beginning: when the knot of Brahma is pierced, the bliss of emptiness arises. In the body you hear the unhit sound, wonderful and resonant.

Svātmārāma describes the first stage (ārambhāvasthā).The key event is the piercing of brahma-granthi, the first psychic knot located in mūlādhāra cakra. This knot represents attachment to the physical body, survival instincts and identification with matter.

When the prāṇa, activated by the practices, passes through this knot, two simultaneous phenomena occur: ānanda (bliss) arises born from śūnya (emptiness), and the anāhata dhvani (non-hit sound) begins to be heard. The word kvṇaka describes a resonant sound, such as the tinkling of ornaments or bells.

The Bihar School notes that this stage marks the actual beginning of the awakening of kuṇḍalinī.The sounds heard at this level are still external and varied (vicitra — wonderful, diverse). The practitioner experiences a new bliss, different from ordinary sensory pleasure, that arises from initial contact with subtler dimensions of consciousness.
