Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 75
अनेनैव विधानेन प्रयाति पवनो लयम् | ततो न जायते मृत्युर्जरारोगादिकं तथा
anenaiva vidhānena prayāti pavano layam | tato na jāyate mṛtyur jarā-rogādikaṃ tathā
By this same method, the air reaches the solution.Then death, old age, illness, etc. do not arise.
This verse describes the supreme result of the combined practice of the three bandhas.Pavano layam prayāti — the air (prāṇa) attains laya or dissolution.This does not mean that prāṇa disappears, but rather that it dissolves into its source, abandoning its ordinary fluctuations and merging into pure consciousness.
When the prāṇa is in constant motion, the mind also fluctuates—this is the fundamental principle underlying prāṇāyāma.When prāṇa reaches laya, the mind also becomes still, allowing deep meditative states to arise.This is the direct connection between haṭha yoga and rāja yoga.
The benefits listed—no death, no old age, no disease—are not literal promises of physical immortality but indicators of a transformed state.The practitioner who has stabilized prāṇa in suṣumṇā transcends identification with the physical body and its limitations.From this perspective, death, old age, and illness belong only to the body, not to the essential being that has recognized its immortal nature.
