Paṇḍitavagga · The Wise · Gāthā 77
Ovadeyyānusāseyya, asabbhā ca nivāraye; sataṃ hi so piyo hoti, asataṃ hoti appiyo.
Ovadeyyānusāseyya, asabbhā ca nivāraye; sataṃ hi so piyo hoti, asataṃ hoti appiyo.
Advise, instruct, turn away from rudeness: for the good this one is dear, for the unworthy this one is not.
Ovadeyyānusāseyya — advise and instruct: two verbs with distinct nuances. Ovadati is to guide at specific moments; anusāsati is to instruct systematically and continuously. The wise one does both.
Asabbhā ca nivāraye — and turn away from rudeness: asabbhā are actions or words that go against good conduct. The wise one not only teaches the positive but actively diverts from the harmful.
Sataṃ hi so piyo hoti — for the good this one is dear: for the virtuous, the one who corrects with wisdom is loved. Correction from someone wise is received as a gift.
Asataṃ hoti appiyo — for the unworthy this one is not: receptivity to correction is one of the most reliable indicators of spiritual maturity. One who rejects it reveals the depth of their attachment to delusion.
