A text from the 5th century BCE that gathers the most direct teachings of Gautama Buddha. 423 verses on mind, suffering, virtue, and liberation. One of the most read texts in the world.

Why it is here

The Dhammapada is not a Haṭha Yoga text. It is Buddhist, and Buddhism and yoga were born from the same soil — the 5th century BCE in northern India — with the same fundamental question: why do we suffer and how can we be free?

The Buddha and Patañjali never met, but their teachings converge with astonishing precision: mind as the origin of suffering, sustained practice as the path, equanimity as the fruit. The Dhammapada speaks of citta where yoga speaks of chitta; of dukkha where yoga speaks of klesha; of nibbāna where yoga speaks of kaivalya.

This text belongs to any serious practitioner, wherever they come from.

The Text

Dhamma (the teaching, reality, law) + pada (path, verse, step): the verses of the path. Part of the Khuddaka Nikāya, the minor collection of the Pāli canon (Tipiṭaka).

The 26 vaggas (chapters) cover all aspects of practice: mind, vigilance, virtue, wisdom, anger, desire, the path. Each verse is a distillation: brief, dense, designed to be memorized and contemplated.

The commentaries accompanying each verse are original to hatha.es, written from the perspective of one who practices yoga and finds in the Dhammapada an unexpectedly faithful mirror of contemplative practice. They are not academic exegesis; they are the reading of a practitioner.

Pāli, not Sanskrit

Key terms in this section are in Pāli: citta (not chitta), dukkha, nibbāna (not nirvāṇa), dhamma (not dharma). It is the language of the Buddha, or at least the closest to it that we preserve.
