Good beings renounce in all circumstances; the peaceful do not chatter from desires; touched by pleasure or pain, the wise do not show highs and lows.

Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti — good beings renounce in all circumstances: cajanti is to let go, renounce. The sappurisa are characterized by being able to let go in all conditions, not only when it is convenient or easy.

Na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo — the peaceful do not chatter from desires: the santa (peaceful ones) do not waste words satisfying conversational desires. Their words, when they speak, have weight and purpose.

Sukhenā phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena — touched by pleasure or pain: the wise are affected by pleasure and pain. They are not insensitive robots. But…

Na uccāvacaṃ paṇḍitā dassayanti — do not show highs and lows: equanimity is not the absence of feeling but the absence of reactive extremes. The wise can feel pleasure and pain fully while maintaining the stable base of consciousness that observes without being swept away.
