Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho, saccānaṃ caturo padā; virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṃ, dvipadānañca cakkhumā.
The best of paths is the Eightfold, the best of truths are the Four, the best of states is dispassion, the best among bipeds is the seer.
Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho — the best of paths is the Eightfold: the aṭṭhaṅgika magga (Noble Eightfold Path) is proclaimed the best of all spiritual paths. Its eight factors cover the totality of human life.
Saccānaṃ caturo padā — the best of truths are the Four: the cattāri ariyasaccāni (Four Noble Truths) are the best formulation of truth. The entire Dhamma is summarized in them.
Virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṃ — the best of states is dispassion: virāga (dispassion, fading of passion) is declared the seṭṭha (best) of all dhamma. Not the most difficult practice nor the most spectacular but silent dispassion.
Dvipadānañca cakkhumā — the best among bipeds is the seer: cakkhumā is one with vision, one who sees — the Buddha. The best human being is one who sees reality as it is.
