Guarded in speech, well controlled in mind, not doing evil with body — purify these three paths of action and attain the path proclaimed by the sages.

Vācānurakkhī — guarded in speech: anurakkhī is one who protects, guards. Protection of speech is the first instruction.

Manasā susaṃvuto — well controlled in mind: the mind well controlled — not repressed but skillfully directed.

Kāyena ca nākusalaṃ kayirā — not doing evil with body: non-doing of harmful actions through body completes the trinity.

Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye — purify these three paths of action: the three kammapatha (paths of action) — bodily, verbal, and mental — that we saw in verses 231-234 of the anger vagga.

Ārādhaye maggamisippavedditaṃ — attain the path proclaimed by the sages: purification of the three paths is the foundation of the path. Without this purification, the higher path is inaccessible.
