Not rising when it is time to rise, young and strong but filled with laziness, with weak resolve and lazy mind, the idle one does not find the path of wisdom.

Uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno — not rising when it is time to rise: laziness is diagnosed as a fundamental obstacle to the path. One who does not rise when they should rise will find nothing.

Yuvā balī ālasiyaṃ upeto — young and strong but filled with laziness: the waste is greater when conditions are favorable. Youth and strength are precious resources — wasting them in laziness is especially lamentable.

Saṃsannasaṅkappamano kusīto — with weak resolve and lazy mind: saṃsanna-saṅkappa is sunk resolve, weak intention. Kusīta is lazy. The combination of external laziness and internal irresolution is the formula for spiritual failure.

Paññāya maggaṃ alaso na vindati — the idle one does not find the path of wisdom: wisdom is not found passively — it requires the active effort of one who rises, seeks, and perseveres.
