Guṇa-Traya-Vibhāga Yoga · Verse 17
सत्त्वात्सञ्जायते ज्ञानं रजसो लोभ एव च | प्रमादमोहौ तमसो भवतोऽज्ञानमेव च
sattvāt sañjāyate jñānaṃ rajaso lobha eva ca | pramāda-mohau tamaso bhavato 'jñānam eva ca
From luminosity knowledge is born, from activity greed; from inertia arise heedlessness and delusion, and also ignorance.
Each guṇa produces its characteristic offspring. Sattva → jñāna (knowledge/wisdom). Rajas → lobha (greed/desire). Tamas → pramāda (heedlessness), moha (delusion), ajñāna (ignorance).
This is a natural law, not moral judgment. The guṇas produce their fruits automatically based on their inherent nature.
The practitioner observing these patterns can recognize which guṇa is active and make conscious choices to cultivate sattva.
