आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा | कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च
āvṛtaṃ jñānam etena jñānino nitya-vairiṇā | kāma-rūpeṇa kaunteya duṣpūreṇānalena ca
Knowledge is covered by this eternal enemy of the wise, oh son of Kuntī, which has the form of desire and is insatiable fire.
Desire as veil of knowledge. Āvṛtam — covered, veiled — describes jñāna obscured not destroyed.
Nitya-vairiṇā — eternal enemy — because it arises from psychic life itself. Kāma-rūpeṇa — in the form of desire — and duṣpūreṇa analena — insatiable fire — indicate that it is never satisfied. Each satisfaction generates new desire; the fire grows with each offering.
