From practice wisdom is born, from non-practice wisdom perishes. Knowing this two-fold path of growth and decline, one should establish oneself so that wisdom grows.
Yogā ve jāyatī bhūri — from practice wisdom is born: yoga here is practice, application, effort. Bhūri is vast wisdom, broad understanding. Wisdom is not a gift but a fruit of practice.
Ayogā bhūrisaṅkhayo — from non-practice wisdom perishes: without practice, wisdom declines. It is not static — it either grows or declines. There is no passive maintenance.
Etaṃ dvedhāpathaṃ ñatvā bhavāya vibhavāya ca — knowing this two-fold path of growth and decline: dvedhā-patha is the forked path, the bifurcation. Each moment is a choice between practice (growth) and non-practice (decline).
Tathattānaṃ niveseyya yathā bhūri pavaḍḍhati — one should establish oneself so that wisdom grows: the practical conclusion is clear: choose the path of growth, establish yourself in practice.
