Bhikkhuvagga · The Monk · Gāthā 369

Dve ca vighātā bhikkhuno, kāme ca bhavagā ca te; Dhammaṁ jānañ ca visuṭṭhānaṃ, sītibhūto bhavābhavaparikkhayo.

Dve ca vighātā bhikkhuno, kāme ca bhavagā ca te; dhammaṁ jānañ ca visuṭṭhānaṃ, sītibhūto bhavābhavaparikkhayo.

Two are the obstacles of the monk: pleasures and the peak of becoming; knowing Dhamma, purified, pacified, becoming and non-becoming cease.

Dve vighātā — two obstacles, two destructions. Pleasures (kāme) destroy by excess; the peak of becoming (bhavagā) destroys by misdirected spiritual ambition.

The monk avoids both extremes: neither sinking into pleasures nor exalting in spiritual achievements.
