श्रीभगवानुवाच | काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः | महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ | mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhy enam iha vairiṇam

The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of passion; it is the great devourer, the great sin. Know it here as the enemy.

Answer: the enemy is kāma-krodha — desire and anger — sprouts of rajas (passion, activity).

Mahāśanaḥ — great devourer — consumes discrimination and will. Mahā-pāpmā — great sin — because all moral error originates here. This is the vairiṇam — enemy — internal, not external. To know it is the first step toward freedom.
