One who honors those worthy of honor, whether Buddhas or their disciples, who have overcome obstacles and crossed beyond grief and lamentation,

Pūjārahe pūjayato — one who honors those worthy of honor: pūjā-araha are the worthy of veneration, those who merit respect for their realization. Correct veneration is directed at beings who have genuinely achieved spiritual attainments.

Buddhe yadi va sāvake — whether Buddhas or their disciples: veneration extends to Buddhas and to their disciples (sāvaka) — the community of beings who have realized various levels of awakening.

Papañcasamatikkante — who have overcome obstacles: papañca is mental proliferation, the concepts that obscure reality. Samatikkanta is having gone beyond, having overcome. Those worthy of honor have overcome the mental proliferation that keeps the ordinary being in confusion.

Tiṇṇasokapariddave — crossed beyond grief and lamentation: tiṇṇa is crossed; soka is grief; parideva is lamentation. Venerable beings have crossed to the other side of the ocean of grief. This verse completes with 196.
