Happy is the arising of the Buddhas, happy is the teaching of the true Dhamma, happy is the harmony of the Sangha, happy is the practice of those living in harmony.

Sukho buddhānaṃ uppādo — happy is the arising of the Buddhas: the birth of a Buddha is a cosmic event of joy. Traditions describe that when a Buddha is born, the universe trembles with joy.

Sukhā saddhammadesanā — happy is the teaching of the true Dhamma: the teaching of saddhamma (true Dhamma) is a source of happiness both for the one who receives it and for the one who gives it. The Dhamma is medicine that cures suffering.

Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī — happy is the harmony of the Sangha: sāmaggi is harmony, unity, concord. The community of practitioners united in practice produces a happiness that transcends the individual.

Samaggānaṃ tapo sukho — happy is the practice of those living in harmony: shared practice (tapo — discipline, austerity) in a context of harmony multiplies happiness. This verse celebrates the Three Jewels as sources of sukha — deep well-being.
