Bālavagga · The Fool · Gāthā 73

Asataṃ bhāvaniccheyya, purekkhārañca bhikkhūsu; āvāsesu ca issariyaṃ, pūjā parakulesu ca.

Asataṃ bhāvaniccheyya, purekkhārañca bhikkhūsu; āvāsesu ca issariyaṃ, pūjā parakulesu ca.

The fool desires unearned recognition, preferential position among monks, authority in monasteries, and veneration from other families.

Asataṃ bhāvaniccheyya — desires an unmerited condition: the fool wants recognition of a spiritual quality they have not developed. This desire to be recognized as what one is not is the root of spiritual charlatanism.

Purekkhārañca bhikkhūsu — preferential position among monks: even in the monastic community exists the temptation of ego. The desire to be first, most respected, is a form of māna that the Buddha diagnoses as the fool’s sign.

Āvāsesu ca issariyaṃ — authority in monasteries: issariya is lordship, power, control. The craving for power in religious institutions is a known and documented pathology in all traditions.

Pūjā parakulesu ca — and veneration from other families: the veneration that should flow naturally from practice, when actively sought, becomes a trap. This verse applies equally to any spiritual figure who actively seeks recognition.
