Akkodhena jine kodhaṃ, asādhuṃ sādhunā jine; jine kadariyaṃ dānena, saccenālikavādinaṃ.

Akkodhena jine kodhaṃ, asādhuṃ sādhunā jine; jine kadariyaṃ dānena, saccenālikavādinaṃ.

Conquer anger with non-anger, conquer evil with good, conquer the miser with generosity, conquer the liar with truth.

Akkodhena jine kodhaṃ — conquer anger with non-anger: akkodha is non-anger, absence of wrath. Not the repression of anger but its genuine absence, cultivated through practice. Victory over anger is not achieved with more anger but with its opposite.

Asādhuṃ sādhunā jine — conquer evil with good: asādhu is evil, what is incorrect; sādhu is good, what is correct. The same logic of inversion: the opposite conquers the opposite.

Jine kadariyaṃ dānena — conquer the miser with generosity: kadariya is the miser; dāna is generosity. Generosity not only counteracts one’s own greed but can transform the miser through example.

Saccenālikavādinaṃ — conquer the liar with truth: sacca (truth) against alikavādin (liar). Consistent truth is the best response to lying. This verse contains an ethic of non-retaliation that resonates with all contemplative traditions and with Gandhi’s message.
