Mokṣa-Sannyāsa Yoga · Verse 3
त्याज्यं दोषवदित्येके कर्म प्राहुर्मनीषिणः | यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यमिति चापरे
tyājyaṃ doṣavad ity eke karma prāhur manīṣiṇaḥ | yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyam iti cāpare
‘Action with defect should be abandoned’, thus say some sages. Others say that the action of sacrifice, charity and austerity should not be abandoned.
Two opinions. Eke (some) say tyājyam — all actions with doṣa (defect) should be abandoned, that is, actions that generate attachment and karma.
Apare (others) say that yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma — the actions of sacrifice, charity and austerity — na tyājyam — should not be abandoned. They are nitya-karma (permanent duties) that purify and sustain the world. Kṛṣṇa will resolve this tension.
