सहयज्ञाः प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा पुरोवाच प्रजापतिः | अनेन प्रसविष्यध्वमेष वोऽस्त्विष्टकामधुक्
saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā purovāca prajāpatiḥ | anena prasaviṣyadhvam eṣa vo 'stv iṣṭa-kāma-dhuk
Having created the creatures together with sacrifice, the Lord of creatures said of old: ‘By this you shall prosper; may this sacrifice be for you the fulfiller of desired desires.’
The cosmic origin of sacrifice is presented. Prajāpati — the Creator — established yajña as the very structure of existence.
Creatures (prajāḥ) and sacrifice are co-eternal. Iṣṭa-kāma-dhuk — “cow that fulfills desired desires” — indicates that sustained sacrifice produces material and spiritual prosperity. The cosmic cycle: the devas nourish humans through rain and harvest; humans nourish the devas through sacrifice. To break this cycle — yajña — is to live as a parasite of the cosmic order.
