श्रीभगवानुवाच | काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः | सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस्त्यागं विचक्षणाः
śrī-bhagavān uvāca | kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ saṃnyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥ | sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṃ prāhus tyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ
The abandonment of actions with desire, the wise know as saṃnyāsa; the abandonment of all fruits of action, the experts call tyāga.
Terminological distinction: saṃnyāsa = renunciation of kāmya-karma — desirous actions, rituals for material results. This is the order of life of the saṃnyāsin.
Tyāga = abandonment of sarva-karma-phala — all fruits of all action. This is the internal attitude that can accompany any mode of life. The vicakṣaṇāḥ (experts, of clear vision) use these terms thus.
