दान

Dāna

niyama

Generosity, giving, donation. From the root dā (to give). One of the oldest and most universal virtues across Indic traditions. In the Bhagavad-gītā (17.20), dāna is classified as sāttvika when given without expectation, at the right place and time, to a worthy recipient. It is considered a form of yajna — sacred offering — and a direct antidote to greed (lobha). In classical yoga, dāna extends beyond material giving to encompass the gift of attention, the gift of knowledge, and the offering of one’s practice for the benefit of all beings. See aparigraha, yajna.
