Ekaṃ dhammaṃ atītissa, musāvādissa jantuno; vitiṇṇaparalokassa, natthi pāpaṃ akāriyaṃ.
Ekaṃ dhammaṃ atītissa, musāvādissa jantuno; vitiṇṇaparalokassa, natthi pāpaṃ akāriyaṃ.
For one who transgresses one dhamma — truth — and who has passed beyond concern for the other world, there is no evil they would not commit.
Ekaṃ dhammaṃ atītissa — for one who transgresses one dhamma: the ekaṃ dhammaṃ (single principle) that is transgressed is revealed next: truth. Transgressing truth opens the door to all other transgressions.
Musāvādissa jantuno — the one who speaks falsely: musāvāda is lying, false speech. This is the fourth of the five fundamental precepts of sīla. The Buddha signals it as the most dangerous because it enables all others.
Vitiṇṇaparalokassa — who has passed beyond concern for the other world: one who has abandoned belief in karmic consequences, who does not believe in the moral dimension of the universe. This moral nihilism is the foundation of behavior without limits.
Natthi pāpaṃ akāriyaṃ — there is no evil they would not commit: if truth does not matter and moral consequences do not exist, then everything is possible. The habitual liar and moral nihilist has no internal brake. This verse is a precise diagnosis of sociopathy.
