No tracks in the sky, no ascetic outside the path. People delight in proliferation, the Tathāgatas are free from it.

Ākāseva padaṃ natthi — no tracks in the sky: as the bird flying leaves no trace (verse 92), the sky is the symbol of freedom that cannot be tracked or conceptualized.

Samaṇo natthi bāhire — no ascetic outside: bāhire is outside, external. The true samaṇa (ascetic) cannot exist “outside” the Buddha’s teaching — not as sectarian exclusivism but as affirmation that the path of liberation is not external to one’s own practice.

Papañcābhiratā pajā — people delight in proliferation: papañca is conceptual proliferation, the incessant multiplication of thoughts, opinions, narratives. Abhiratā is delighting in. Ordinary people enjoy their own mental agitation.

Nippapañcā tathāgatā — the Tathāgatas are free from it: nippapañca is without proliferation. Buddhas (Tathāgata = “thus come” or “thus gone”) have transcended mental proliferation. Their mind is open sky — no tracks, no noise, no conceptual agitation.
