One who has cut off, uprooted, and destroyed these defects — that wise one, free from hatred, is called a truly good person.

The pair 262-263 functions like other verses in this vagga: the false definition (262) followed by the true one (263). The good person is defined not by appearance but by the eradication of envy, miserliness, and deceit.

Samucchinnaṃ mūlaghaccaṃ samūhataṃ — cut, uprooted, destroyed: the triple expression of eradication we saw in verse 250. Elimination must be complete, not partial.

Vantadoso — free from hatred: vanta (vomited) + dosa (hatred). Hatred has been expelled from the system like a toxic substance. The digestive image is graphic but effective.

The truly good person is interior, not exterior. Their qualities are not visible at first glance but are felt in their presence and recognized in their actions over time.
