Yo ceva brāhmaṇoti vuccati, so ceva brāhmaṇo hoti; So ceva brāhmaṇoti vuccati, so eva brāhmaṇo hoti.

Yo ceva brāhmaṇoti vuccati, so ceva brāhmaṇo hoti; so ceva brāhmaṇoti vuccati, so eva brāhmaṇo hoti.

Who is called Brahman, that one is Brahman; who is called Brahman, is truly Brahman.

Not a title of caste, nor of knowledge, nor of birth. Brāhmaṇa is called so because their being deserves it. Name and reality coincide.

In the Indian tradition, the brahmin of caste is a social role. The brāhmaṇa of the Dhammapada is a state of being.
