Appassutāya sikkhāya, bhikkhuno laghusārathā; ussāhaṃ janaye puññaṃ, uyyojemi bahussutaṃ.

Appassutāya sikkhāya, bhikkhuno laghusārathā; ussāhaṃ janaye puññaṃ, uyyojemi bahussutaṃ.

Of little learning is the instruction of the light-minded monk; make effort to generate merit, I exhort the very learned.

This verse contrasts the superficial monk (laghusārathā) with the very learned (bahussuta). The instruction (sikkhā) of one who knows little is necessarily limited.

Ussāhaṃ janaye puññaṃ — generate merit (puñña) with effort (ussāha). Even with little knowledge, correct action produces Results.

In yoga, vidyā (correct knowledge) is accompanied by avidyā its aberration where ignorance-separation between knowing and practice feeds the illusion of the scholarly ego.
