Like a solid rock that does not move with the wind, so the wise do not waver amid blame and praise.

Selo yathā ekaghano — like a solid rock: ekaghana is of a single mass, solid, without cracks. This rock is not rigidity but integral coherence: without hollow parts that the wind can shake.

Vātena na samīrati — does not move with the wind: stability does not depend on external conditions. The wind can be gentle or furious — the rock does not distinguish nor react.

Nindāpasaṃsāsu — in blame and praise: two of the eight worldly conditions (lokadhamma). The wise do not oscillate before any of these pairs of opposites.

Na samiñjanti paṇḍitā — the wise do not waver: upekkha (equanimity) is not insensibility. The wise perceives praise and blame but does not react compulsively. The rock is not deaf to the wind; it simply does not move because of it. In the Bhagavad Gītā, the sthitaprajña embodies this same quality.
