Asajjhāyamalā mantā, anuṭṭhānamalā gharā; malaṃ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṃ, pamādo rakkhato malaṃ.

Asajjhāyamalā mantā, anuṭṭhānamalā gharā; malaṃ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṃ, pamādo rakkhato malaṃ.

Non-recitation is the impurity of mantras, inactivity is the impurity of houses, laziness is the impurity of beauty, negligence is the impurity of a guardian.

Asajjhāyamalā mantā — non-recitation is the impurity of mantras: asajjhāya is lack of recitation and study. Sacred mantras lose their power when not studied and recited — they become dead words.

Anuṭṭhānamalā gharā — inactivity is the impurity of houses: houses neglected, without maintenance, deteriorate. The metaphor is clear: every structure needs continuous attention.

Malaṃ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṃ — laziness is the impurity of beauty: kosajja is laziness, indolence. Beauty (vaṇṇa) deteriorates when laziness neglects it — both physical and spiritual beauty.

Pamādo rakkhato malaṃ — negligence is the impurity of a guardian: the negligent guardian is worse than no guardian — they create false security. Thus negligent attention: not only does it not protect but gives the illusion of protection.
