Taṇhāvagga · Craving · Gāthā 358
Taṇhakkhayo virāgo ca, nibbānaṁ sacchikiriya ca; Ayameva anusatthānaṁ, esā me kathā matā.
Taṇhakkhayo virāgo ca, nibbānaṁ sacchikiriya ca; ayameva anusatthānaṁ, esā me kathā matā.
Extinction of thirst and dispassion, realization of nibbana; this is the final instruction, this is my concluding word.
The Taṇhāvaṅgavagga closes thus: the entire teaching condenses into taṇhakkhaya — extinction of thirst. It is not a distant mystical achievement, it is the natural exhaustion of desire when its mechanism is understood.
Esā me kathā matā — this is my concluding word. The Buddha could have ended here. Everything else is commentary.
