Prathamopadeśaḥ (Ṣaṭkarma) · Verse 22

एवं त्रिकं चतुष्कं वा यावदष्टकमेव वा | क्रमेणैव तु कर्तव्यं वस्त्यभ्यासं शरीरिणा ||

evaṃ trikaṃ catuṣkaṃ vā yāvadaṣṭakameva vā | krameṇaiva tu kartavyaṃ vastyabhyāsaṃ śarīriṇā ||

Gradual progression: from 3 to 8 cycles of filling and emptying. The body needs to adapt to this intensive practice; beginning with too many cycles can cause discomfort.

The phrase “one who has a body” (śarīriṇa) is an elegant way of referring to the practitioner, reminding us that we are working with the embodied condition.

Gradualness (krameṇa) is a fundamental principle of yoga: respecting the body’s limits while expanding its capacities.
