Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 24

मृतासनं ततः प्रोक्तं योगिनां सुखसाधकम् | शववद्भूमौ स्थित्वा तु मृतो ह्यस्मीति भावयेत् ||

mṛtāsanaṃ tataḥ proktaṃ yogināṃ sukhasādhanam | śavavad bhūmau sthitvā tu mṛto hyasmīti bhāvayet ||

Mṛtāsana — the corpse posture. Today we know it as Śavāsana, the corpse’s rest. But Gheraṇḍa emphasizes something deeper than simple relaxation.

“Remaining like a corpse… one meditates: ‘I am dead.’” This is not morbidity but an advanced technique of vairāgya — non-attachment. By simulating death, the practitioner experiences the absence of ego.

The dead body has no ambitions, no fears, no to-do list. By adopting its complete stillness, we access a peace impossible to reach under any other condition. It is the ultimate preparation for mahāsamādhi.
