Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 31
जिह्वाया अग्रभागं तु छित्त्वा छेदनकर्मणा | मूलतः संचुणीयात्तु घृतसर्षपतैलकैः ||
jihvāyā agrabhāgaṃ tu chittvā chedanakarmaṇā | mūlataḥ saṃcuṇīyāt tu ghṛtasarṣapatailakaiḥ ||
The chedana — lingual cutting. This is the advanced preliminary practice of Khecarī: cutting the frenulum that joins the tongue to the floor of the mouth to allow the tongue to extend further backward.
Ghī and mustard oil are used for healing. The process must be done gradually — small cuts over time — never all at once.
This practice is controversial and potentially dangerous if done incorrectly. In the modern tradition, many teachers teach a “gentle” Khecarī without cutting, simply touching the palate where the tongue naturally reaches.
