Navama-prakaraṇam (Samādhi) · Verse 3
बीजरूपेण संवृत्ता त्रिगुणात्मा च भोगिनी । यदा प्रबुध्यते साक्षात् तदा मोक्षं प्रयच्छति ॥
bījarūpeṇa saṃvṛttā triguṇātmā ca bhoginī | yadā prabudhyate sākṣāt tadā mokṣaṃ prayacchati ||
This verse describes the fundamental nature of the ātman as intrinsically linked to the experience of bhoga, or enjoyment, and crucially, to the attainment of moksha, liberation. The term bija-rupa – “seed-form” – denotes the inherent potential within the individual, a state characterized by the threefold guṇa (qualities) of sattva, rajas, and tamas, which constitute the very substance of consciousness. This ‘enjoyer’ – the bhogini – is not a separate entity superimposed upon experience, but rather the fundamental mode of being that actively engages with and interprets the world. The awakening of this inner potential, described as prabuddha – “directly awakened” – is the critical moment; only through this self-realization does true liberation arise. It’s a dynamic process where the inherent nature of the ātman, previously obscured by the fluctuations of the guṇa, becomes fully manifest, dissolving the illusion of separation. This verse anticipates the yogic understanding that liberation isn’t a subsequent state to be achieved, but rather the unfolding of the ātman’s inherent capacity for blissful awareness.
