"The Yoga of Yājñavalkya"
An intimate dialogue between the sage Yājñavalkya and his wife Gārgī in the midst of an assembly of ṛṣis. Probably composed between the 9th and 12th centuries, this text synthesizes the Vedic tradition with Haṭha Yoga practices.
Historical context
The Yoga Yājñavalkya is one of the oldest texts that systematically articulates the aṣṭāṅga-yoga. Unlike the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, it does not come from the Nāth tradition but from a Vedic brāhmaṇic lineage.
The dialogical form—with Gārgī as interlocutor—is unusual in Sanskrit technical literature and gives the text an accessible tone without sacrificing doctrinal rigor. The author presents himself as a transmitter of a teaching received directly from Brahmā.
Structure and content
Twelve prakaraṇas (chapters) cover: yama, niyama, āsana, nāḍī-śuddhi, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyāna, samādhi, karma-yoga, upadeśa-saṃgraha and kuṇḍalinī. The text presents a complete system where ethics prepare the body-mind for realization.
Particularly valuable is the anatomical detail of the nāḍī system and the classification of japa forms, which do not appear with such precision in other early texts.

The first prakaraṇa introduces Yājñavalkya as the supreme teacher and establishes the dialogue framework with Gārgī. It expounds the ten yamas: ahiṃsā, satya, asteya, brahmacarya, dayā, ārjavam, kṣamā, dhṛti, mitāhāra and śauca. Each yama is defined for the four āśramas and detailed in body, speech and mind.
