Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 28
ते देवानामृषीणां च पितॄणामृणिनस्तथा । ऋषिभ्यो ब्रह्मचर्येण पितृभ्यश्च सुतैस्तथा ॥
te devānāmṛṣīṇāṃ ca pitṝṇāmṛṇinastathā | ṛṣibhyo brahmacaryeṇa pitṛbhyośca sutaistathā ||
Every human born carries three debts (ṛṇa): to the gods (devāḥ), to the sages (ṛṣi), and to the ancestors (pitaraḥ). These debts are discharged through sacrifice (yajña), celibacy/study (brahmacarya), and progeny (suta) respectively. This tripartite obligation structures Vedic life and establishes the dharma that yoga must integrate, not negate. The yoga path begins from the fulfillment of these fundamental obligations.
