यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः | प्रेतान्भूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसा जनाः

yajante sāttvikā devān yakṣa-rakṣāṃsi rājasāḥ | pretān bhūta-gaṇāṃś cānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ

The sāttvika sacrifice to the devas, the rājasika to the yakṣas and rākṣasas; others, the tāmasika, sacrifice to the pretas and to the hordes of bhūtas.

Objects of worship according to the guṇa. Sāttvikāḥ — those of sattva — worship devān — luminous deities (Viṣṇu, Śiva, Devas).

Rājasāḥ — those of rajas — worship yakṣa-rakṣāṃsi — semigods of material power, forces of wealth and protection. Tāmasāḥ — those of tamas — worship pretān (spirits of the dead), bhūta-gaṇān (hordes of ghosts, elemental beings). Faith orientates toward the object corresponding to one’s level of consciousness.
