Śraddhā-Trayā-Vibhāga Yoga · Verse 3

सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत | श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata | śraddhā-mayo 'yaṃ puruṣo yo yac chraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ

Conformable to sattva is the faith of each one, oh Bhārata. This human being is made of faith; that in which he has faith, that is he.

Fundamental principle: śraddhā anurūpā — conformable to, corresponding to — the sattva of the individual. There is no “neutral” faith; all faith is an expression of guṇic constitution.

Profound identification: śraddhā-mayaḥ ayam puruṣaḥ — this human being is composed (maya) of faith. Yaḥ yat śraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ — that in which he has faith, that very thing (saḥ) he is (saḥ). Faith constitutes identity; what one believes, that one becomes.
