यः सत्त्वे तिष्ठन् यं सत्त्वं न वेद यस्य सत्त्वं शरीरं यः सत्त्वेऽन्तरो यमयत्येष त आत्मान्तर्याम्यमृतः
yaḥ sattve tiṣṭhan yaṃ sattvaṃ na veda yasya sattvaṃ śarīraṃ yaḥ sattve'ntaro yamayaty eṣa ta ātmāntaryāmy amṛtaḥ
He who, dwelling in luminosity, whom luminosity does not know, whose body is luminosity, who controls luminosity from within —He is your Ātman, the Inner Ruler, the Immortal.
Sattva (luminosity/harmony) is the highest guṇa, associated with knowledge, peace and virtue. Even so, even sattva does not know its ruler. This is an important warning: elevated states of consciousness, clarity, intuition —though preferable to rajas or tamas— are still manifestations, not ultimate Reality. In our yoga practice, when we experience moments of profound clarity, we can remember that there is something that is conscious even of this clarity. The antaryāmin transcends all guṇas, even the subtlest.
