Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 43
भार्यया त्वेवमुक्तस्तु याज्ञवल्क्यस्तपोनिधिः । तां समालोक्य कृपया ज्ञानरूपमभाषत ॥
bhāryayā tvevamuktastu yājñavalkyastaponidhiḥ | tāṃ samālokya kṛpayā jñānarūpamabhāṣata ||
The narrative note that Gārgī is called bhāryā (wife) here is significant — she is Yājñavalkya’s spouse, and their dialogue has an intimacy that goes beyond the formal teacher-student relationship. Yājñavalkya looks at her with compassion (kṛpayā) and expounds jñānarūpa — the form of knowledge. The combination of conjugal intimacy and spiritual authority creates a unique teaching dynamic.
