Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 42
गार्ग्युवाच - ज्ञानेन सह योगीन्द्र विध्युक्तं कर्म कुर्वतः । त्वयोक्तं मुक्तिरस्तीति तयोर्ज्ञानं वद प्रभो ॥
gārgyuvāca - jñānena saha yogīndra vidhyuktaṃ karma kurvataḥ | tvayoktaṃ muktirastīti tayorjñānaṃ vada prabho ||
Gārgī’s second question targets the relationship between karma and jñāna: if liberation comes from acting with knowledge, then what is this knowledge? Tayor jñānaṃ vada prabho — tell me the knowledge of both. She is not asking for a separate exposition of jñāna but for understanding how the two work together. This is the question that opens the yogic teaching proper — the aṣṭāṅga exposition that follows.
