Gārgī Vācaknavī (or Gārgī Vācaknu) is a prominent figure of the Vedic tradition, best known for her dialogues in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad and as the principal interlocutor of the Yoga Yājñavalkya. She is presented as the wife of Yājñavalkya, a brahmavidvarā (“expert in the knowledge of Brahman”) and the most excellent among the women present in the assembly of ṛṣis.

In the Yoga Yājñavalkya, Gārgī poses the questions that structure the entire text: she asks to know the essence of yoga, the purification of the nāḍīs, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra and the higher states of meditation. Her role is not passive: each question drives the exposition forward and deepens the topic. The master-disciple dialogue here takes the form of a conversation between spouses, something unusual in Sanskrit technical literature.

The inclusion of Gārgī as an authorized interlocutor reflects a conception of yoga where practice is not limited by gender, and where [[shraddha|śraddhā]] and intellectual curiosity are essential qualities for spiritual progress.
