Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 53
वेदेनोक्तेऽपि हिंसास्यादभिचारादि कर्म यत् । सत्यं भूतहितं प्रोक्तं नियतार्थाभिभाषणम् ॥
vedenokte'pi hiṃsāsyādabhicārādi karma yat | satyaṃ bhūtahitaṃ proktaṃ niyatārthābhibhāṣaṇam ||
Satya is defined as bhūtahita — that which benefits beings. This is not mere factual accuracy but truth in service of welfare. The verse also addresses the tension between Vedic prescriptions of hiṃsā (such as in sacrificial rites) and the yama of non-violence, suggesting that even scripturally sanctioned violence falls short of the yogic ideal. Niyatārthābhibhāṣaṇam — speaking with determined purpose — connects truth to intentional, beneficial communication.
