सत्यान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । धर्मान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । कुशलान्न प्रमदितव्यम् । भूत्यै न प्रमदितव्यम् । स्वाध्यायप्रवचनाभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम् । देवपितृकार्याभ्यां न प्रमदितव्यम्
satyān na pramaditavyam | dharmān na pramaditavyam | kuśalān na pramaditavyam | bhūtyai na pramaditavyam | svādhyāyapravacanābhyāṃ na pramaditavyam | devapitṛkāryābhyāṃ na pramaditavyam
One should not neglect truth. One should not neglect dharma. One should not neglect welfare. One should not neglect prosperity. One should not neglect study and teaching. One should not neglect the duties to the devas and ancestors.
This anuvāka expands the duties with an emphasis on non-negligence (na pramaditavyam). The repetition of this phrase six times underscores the urgency and importance of each of these aspects.
The six elements form a complete program of spiritual life:
- Satya — Truth in thought, word, and action
- Dharma — Righteousness and virtuous actions
- Kuśala — Physical welfare and health
- Bhūti — Prosperity and adequate material means
- Svādhyāya-pravacana — Continuous study and teaching
- Deva-pitṛ-kārya — Duties to the gods and ancestors
The inclusion of kuśala and bhūti is significant: traditional yoga does not reject the world or the body, but uses them as foundations for spiritual practice. A sick body or an existence plagued by material scarcities hinder spiritual progress.
Teaching what has been learned (pravacana) is as important as the study itself — only when we teach do we truly understand.
