Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 6

तमेवं गुणसम्पन्नं नारीणामुत्तमा वधूः । मैत्रेयी च महाभागा गार्गी च ब्रह्मविद्वरा ॥

tamevaṃ guṇasampannaṃ nārīṇāmuttamā vadhūḥ | maitreyī ca mahābhāgā gārgī ca brahmavidvarā ||

The dramatis personae are introduced: Maitreyī and Gārgī, both drawn to the sage’s qualities. Maitreyī is called nārīṇām uttamā vadhūḥ — the foremost among women, and mahābhāgā — greatly fortunate. Gārgī is brahmavidvarā — the best among knowers of Brahman. These are not passive listeners; in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, both women engage Yājñavalkya in rigorous philosophical debate. Their presence here affirms that the yoga teaching is accessible to women, a notable feature of this text.
