Maitreyī

personaje

Maitreyī is a distinguished figure of the Upaniṣadic tradition, known for her dialogue with Yājñavalkya in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad (2.4 and 4.5). In the Yoga Yājñavalkya she is mentioned alongside Gārgī as one of the most eminent women present in the assembly of ṛṣis.

Her name derives from Mitra, the Vedic god of friendship and harmony, suggesting a benevolent and compassionate nature. In the tradition, Maitreyī represents the sincere pursuit of [[jnana|jñāna]] (absolute knowledge) over worldly riches. When Yājñavalkya offers her a material inheritance, she prefers the teaching on the immortality of [[atman|Ātman]].

Her inclusion in the Yoga Yājñavalkya alongside Gārgī underscores that the yogic path is open to those who possess the right disposition, regardless of gender.
