Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 8

भगवन्सर्वशास्त्रज्ञ सर्वभूतहिते रत । योगतत्त्वं मम ब्रूहि साङ्गोपाङ्गं विधानतः ॥

bhagavansarvaśāstrajña sarvabhūtahite rata | yogatattvaṃ mama brūhi sāṅgopāṅgaṃ vidhānataḥ ||

Gārgī’s request is precise and ambitious: yogatattvaṃ sāṅgopāṅgaṃ vidhānataḥ — the essence of yoga, with all its limbs and sub-limbs, in proper order. This establishes the organizational principle of the entire text: a systematic, hierarchical exposition. The term sāṅgopāṅga suggests that yoga has primary and secondary components, anticipating the aṣṭāṅga framework. Her address — bhagavan sarvaśāstrajña — acknowledges the comprehensive authority needed for such a complete teaching.
