Jñāna Yoga · Verse 1
श्रीभगवानुवाच | इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम् | विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्
śrī-bhagavān uvāca | imaṃ vivasvate yogaṃ proktavān aham avyayam | vivasvān manave prāha manur ikṣvākave 'bravīt
The Blessed Lord said: This imperishable yoga I first taught to the sun-god, who taught it to Manu, and Manu transmitted it to Ikṣvāku.
Kṛṣṇa reveals the antiquity of yoga. Avyaya — imperishable, inexhaustible — indicates eternal truth, not a recent invention.
The chain of transmission (paramparā) begins with Vivasvān (the Sun), then Manu (human ancestor), then Ikṣvāku (first king of the solar dynasty). This lineage indicates that yoga is ancestral knowledge, not innovation. Teaching requires direct transmission; books only preserve, they do not transmit.
