Dvitīya-prakaraṇam (Niyama) · Verse 7

रागाद्यपेतं हृदयं वागदुष्टानृतादिना । हिंसादिरहितः काय एतदीश्वरपूजनम् ॥

rāgādyapetaṃ hṛdayaṃ vāgaduṣṭānṛtādinā | hiṃsādirahitaḥ kāya etadīśvarapūjanam ||

This verse delineates the essential preparations for the worship of Īśvara, emphasizing the paramount importance of inner purification. The description of the heart, hrdya, free from attachment and passions, raga, indicates a crucial detachment from worldly desires – a state necessary for clear perception and sustained dhyāna. Similarly, the speech, vagd, must be cleansed of wickedness and falsehoods, aduna and ardha, reflecting a commitment to truthfulness and integrity, vital for maintaining a balanced and harmonious prāṇa. The body, kaya, must be protected from harm, himsa, signifying a conscious effort to avoid causing suffering to any living being, a core ethical principle within yogic practice. Ultimately, this disciplined approach – the purification of the heart, speech, and body – is presented as the very definition of īśvara-pūjanam, the genuine worship of Īśvara, a state of being aligned with the divine will and reflecting the inherent goodness within the practitioner.
