Prathama-prakaraṇam (Yama) · Verse 48

आसनान्युत्तमान्यष्टौ त्रयं तेषूत्तमोत्तमम् । प्रणायामस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तः प्रत्याहारश्च पञ्चधा ॥

āsanānyuttamānyaṣṭau trayaṃ teṣūttamottamam | praṇāyāmastri dhā proktaḥ pratyāhāraśca pañcadhā ||

Quantification of the limbs: eight principal āsanas (with three uttamottama — best of the best), three types of prāṇāyāma, and five types of pratyāhāra. This numerical specificity is characteristic of the saṃhitā genre, which catalogs practices with precision. The three-fold prāṇāyāma corresponds to pūraka, kumbhaka, and recaka — inhalation, retention, and exhalation — though the text will elaborate differently.
