Dvitīya-prakaraṇam (Niyama) · Verse 1

याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच - तपः सन्तोष आस्तिक्यं दानमीश्वरपूजनम् । सिद्धान्तश्रवणं चैव ह्रीर्मतिश्च जपो व्रतम् ॥

yājñavalkya uvāca - tapaḥ santoṣa āstikyaṃ dānamīśvarapūjanam | siddhāntaśravaṇaṃ caiva hrīrmatiśca japo vratam ||

Yājñavalkya’s opening to the second prakaraṇa is a carefully constructed enumeration of the foundational niyamas, a structure of ten paired disciplines designed for clarity and memorability. The recurring pattern of ten and ten—the yamas and the niyamas—provides a framework for the text, facilitating both oral transmission and contemplative absorption. The listed practices—tapas (discipline), santosha (contentment), astikya (faith), dana (charity), īśvara-pūjana (worship of God), siddhānta-śravana (hearing established doctrines), hrī (chanting), mati (mindfulness), japa (repetition of mantras), and vrata (observance of vows)—represent the bedrock upon which a stable and effective yogic life is built. This systematic approach reflects the broader methodological rigor characteristic of Yājñavalkya’s system, echoing the concerns articulated within the Patañjali Yoga Suśruma and demonstrating a commitment to providing a practical, accessible path towards self-transformation.
